Lee Sim has been involved in the art of hand-lettering for over 30 years. His interest in
lettering first developed in a high school drafting class. His professional education and
career has centered on water related engineering and regulation, however, through the years he
continued his interest in and enjoyment of the art of calligraphy. He was mostly self-taught
until the mid-1990’s when he decided to pursue the art more seriously and joined the Utah
Calligraphic Artists guild in Salt Lake City. This association has provided not only the
opportunity for instruction from nationally known calligraphers but also support and
encouragement in his ongoing efforts to improve his abilities in this art form.
Lee also has always liked short quotations that encourage, inspire, and motivate. This dual
interest came together in 2004 when he started to create short hand-lettered thought cards for
family and friends on a regular basis. The small cards were received well and over time, as the
circle of people receiving the cards grew, the idea was born for this venture and this website.
Although he has an appreciation for the capabilities afforded by computers, Lee’s interest
has always been limited to artwork created by hand. The lettering and artwork on the originals
for each of the pieces shown on this website is done entirely by hand; nothing is computer
generated.
Lee lives just north of Salt Lake City in Utah with his wife. They have a family of four
children and a growing number of grandchildren.
